The only thing we really learned in class was the Ribbon rose. The way you make these roses is by using the flower nail, then freezing it until it is firm. Once the rose is firm you can (more) easily place it on your cake. The rest of the class was spent decorating our cakes.
Although I DEFINITELY need more practice, I'm quite pleased with how my cake turned out.
I asked our instructor why my roses looked "cracked" or like the icing sort of had bubbles in it, and she told me that I didn't have enough Crisco in it. So I guess next time I'll add a bit more Crisco than the butter cream recipe called for.

That is so cool! I have always thought it would be fun to take a cake decorating class.. I'm curious though, why Crisco?
ReplyDeleteIt what the recipe called for. Apparently, icing a cake you should use half butter half crisco (for taste), but flowers and other decor you use all crisco so it doesnt "melt". I dunno. I'll probably try out some different recipes.
ReplyDeleteYou did such a good job! I really want to take a cake decorating class now!
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower from the Military Monday blog hop. I've always loved decorating cakes. I have a giant wilton set of tips and bags and stuff, but I've never taken a class. I should really look into that.
ReplyDeleteAll the photos of your food look delicious. I cannot wait to see more.
